First Dance Lessons: How Many You Need and What to Expect
By Bella Vita Team
Most couples need three to six first dance lessons. Three lessons get you moving together with confidence. Six lessons give you a full routine built to your song. Ten lessons give you room for dips, lifts and a big finish.
Here is everything to know before you book.
How many first dance lessons do you need?
- 3 lessons: You learn a simple pattern, a turn or two and how to lead and follow. Great for couples who want to look relaxed, not rehearsed.
- 6 lessons: You learn a custom routine with a clear start and finish. This is the sweet spot for most couples.
- 10 lessons: You learn a showpiece. Think dips, a lift or a song mashup that makes guests cheer.
These match our three wedding packages at Bella Vita: Wedding Intro ($349), Wedding Core ($749) and Wedding Premium ($1,149). See the full list on our pricing page.
When should you start?
Start two to three months before the wedding. Book one lesson each week or every other week. Practice ten minutes at home between lessons. That rhythm builds muscle memory without stress.
Six months out feels calm. One month out still works. We simplify the routine so it looks great on the day.
What happens in your first lesson
- We hear your song. We check its speed and feel.
- We learn how you move. No judgment. Most couples have never danced before.
- We teach a basic step. You leave the first lesson dancing together.
- We plan the rest. We map out what each lesson covers, so you know the path.
How to pick your first dance song
- Pick a song you both love. You hear it many times while you practice.
- Check the speed. A slow song gives you time to breathe. A fast song needs more lessons.
- Mind the length. Most couples cut the song to two or three minutes. Your DJ can fade it out for you.
- Bring two options. We help you pick the one that dances best.
Tips for the big day
- Practice in your wedding shoes. Heels and dress shoes change your balance.
- Practice in a long skirt or bustle. Know where the train goes when you turn.
- Walk through it at the venue. Find your start spot and where the photographer stands.
- Smile and breathe. Guests remember joy, not steps.
